Personal, Challenging Approach to Education

We treasure individuality. At University High School, we see each student as a unique individual, not a number. Our classes are intimate learning environments where teachers develop a full understanding of how each student learns and what interests and motivates them. Teachers recognize the individual challenges that students face. Students may go to teachers and talk about class material that they do not understand. Our small classes allow teachers to respond to students’ individual learning styles.

We introduce students to the pleasures of a liberal arts education. We set high academic standards and encourage excellence. We value honest, open discussion. At University High School, the process is more important than getting the right answer. We want students to understand how they got the answers and to analyze what the answer means. Throughout the process, we help students develop critical thinking skills and solve dilemmas.

I have two older children who attended other high schools. In contrast to our older children’s experiences, our daughter had the highest cumulative grade point of any of our children, while taking a more challenging course load, including several advanced placement courses. This is because she received far more personalized attention from all of her teachers and in particular from her mentor. Lastly, we were most impressed with the college counseling program, which is a four-year personalized approach. This is a far cry from our earlier experiences, where our older children’s college materials were impersonal form letters, which in several cases were delayed and incomplete.
