Regular Communications

Regular communications ensure everyone is working towards the same goals. Parents receive academic updates four times each semester and can view grades on Edline at any time. When students do not perform up to expectations, they see an immediate and focused response from teachers and staff. Parents are encouraged to contact the student’s mentor any time there is a concern. Likewise, mentors will contact parents with any issues the student may encounter.

At the public school, our children occasionally got a computer-coded teacher comment on the grade reports. This was typically a generic statement such as “Pleasure to have in class” or “Good effort is shown.” At University, our daughter receives a two-page progress report with specific information about her grade, effort, strengths and weaknesses. Several teachers noted and appreciated her dry sense of humor. She has never had a teacher note this before, even though it is a big part of her personality.

When we met with her mentor to discuss the report, the mentor further talked about what was going well and what areas were still in progress. This was a positive and encouraging meeting, but it did not ignore the areas on which our daughter needs to work. She walked away from the meeting with a vision of what she can accomplish and some specific steps about how to get there.
