Small by Design
University is purposely small with a focus on individualized education. A study by the U.S. Department of Education, The Condition of Education 2002, suggests that small schools with small classes often lead to higher achieving students. The report found that:
- Private-school teachers can better communicate consistent goals to students and collaborate more effectively on raising student achievement in small learning environments.
- Private-school students are more likely to complete a bachelor’s or advanced degree by their mid-20s.
- Private-school students perform higher on standardized tests.
- Private schools have more demanding graduation requirements.
- Private-school graduates are more likely to have completed advanced-level classes in three academic subject areas.
- Private-school students get to know fellow students and their teachers. There is a strong sense of community.
- Placing students in small environments fosters close working relationships between the teachers and the students, which enhances learning.
By maintaining a small size, University High School is able to provide the kind of education we feel every student deserves.
Our size allows us to have:
- A formal mentoring program
- Four-year personalized college counseling
- Competitive, inclusive IHSAA sports program
- Multiple leadership opportunities for students
- 8:1 teacher/student ratio to ensure ample student/faculty interaction
We have a competitive athletic program, exceptional arts department, challenging academics and meaningful volunteer programs without hundreds of students in each grade.
A small class size makes the learning environment more relaxing and allows me to think better especially when compared to being in a classroom with 30 people and not being able to concentrate at all.
