Part of the application process is enjoying a full day at University High School, shadowing a host student.
What will happen on my shadow day?
You will attend classes with your host, getting a feel for the culture and classes at University. If adjustments are made to your schedule, your host will drop you and pick you up or another friendly University student will escort you. You will also have a conversation with a member of the admission committee sometime during the day. This is just to get to know you a little better and see how your day is going.
When do I arrive?
8:00 a.m. is the earliest you need to arrive.
What are the hours of the school day?
8:15-3:00
Do my parents come in with me?
If you would like or they would like to, they are welcome. But they can just drop you on the circle, if you’d rather. Similarly, at 3:00 you can meet them out front, or they can come in to pick you up.
What are the best days to shadow?
Typically Monday and Friday are the best because all classes meet. The worst day to shadow is Wednesday because there are three double blocks and it is harder to see all subjects. You can check our calendar when scheduling your visit. Go for an A or E day, and avoid C days if possible.
What is the dress code?
There is no dress code other than reasonable dress—skirts and shorts not too short, shoulders covered and no cleavage, no underwear showing, nothing offensive on shirts. But dress for weather! You will go outside between buildings.
Do I bring lunch?
Lunch is provided. Please tell us of any dietary restrictions ahead!
What do I need to bring?
Just a notebook. But if you play an instrument, bring it if you’d like to play along in a music class.
Can I request a host?
Yes. If you know someone you’d like to shadow with, let us know.
What if I want to see a class that my host doesn’t have?
Just let us know when you arrive and we can adjust your schedule. For example, if you’re a real math enthusiast we can add upper level math classes, or if you're a writer, we can put you in Creative Writing, even if your host doesn’t take it.
Can I shadow more than once?
Absolutely.
Can 7th graders shadow?
7th graders can shadow in the spring, but we want you to shadow again in 8th grade. 8th graders can start shadowing after Labor Day.
What if the weather is bad?
We announce school closings and delays on local TV stations, as well as under 'Latest News' on our main website. If we cancel school, of course we'll reschedule your visit.
