University High School has a rich arts program that includes standard offerings as well as a rotation of other courses dependent upon enrollment. Offerings in music, drama and visual arts, including AP courses, are supplemented by January Term opportunities that enhance and broaden the standard curriculum.
The school believes that every student should have the opportunity to create art, understand art and the creative process, perceive art and value art. To achieve this, inclusive experience, composition and theory are elements in all music classes and the studio-art classes include elements of art history. Process is emphasized over product.
The inclusion of arts classes in the graduation requirements; the incorporation of grades for arts classes on an equal basis as academic classes; and the provision for multiple opportunities for public presentation of work demonstrate the school's support of the fine and performing arts department. In addition, the arts faculty is devoted to integration of the arts in the greater school community and curriculum. Finally, the arts teachers are practicing artists themselves, modeling not only the value of art in education, but as a life-long vocation.
