Shadow Visit Information
One important part of the admission process at University High School is the shadow visit. The shadow visit is a great way to get a feel for the culture and community of our school. Here are answers to a few questions you may have in advance of your shadow visit. Schedule your shadow visit today by contacting Nancy Webster at 317-733-4475, ext. 102 or email@example.com.
What will happen on my shadow day?
During your shadow visit day, you will attend classes with your host, getting a feel for the culture and classes at University. If adjustments are made to your schedule, your host will drop you and pick you up or another friendly University student will escort you. You will also have a conversation with a member of the admission committee sometime during the day. This is just to get to know you a little better and see how your day is going.
What are the hours of the school day?
Most school days are from 8:15 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. On Mondays, however, our typical school day is from 9:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
What are the best days to shadow?
Generally, Mondays (A Days) and Fridays (E Days) are the best days to visit because all classes meet. Wednesday (C Day) is often the worst day to shadow because there are three double blocks in the schedule, making it harder for you to attend classes in all subjects. You can check our calendar before scheduling your visit if you’d like to see what the schedule is like.
Do I bring lunch?
Lunch is provided. Please notify us if you have any dietary restrictions.
May I request a host?
Absolutely! If you know someone at University you’d like to shadow for the day, let us know.
Are 7th graders permitted to shadow?
7th graders can shadow in the spring semester, but we ask that you shadow again in your 8th grade year. Students in 8th grade may start shadowing after Labor Day.
What if the weather is bad?
We announce school closings and delays on local TV stations, as well as on our home page. If we cancel school, we’ll be happy to reschedule your visit.
May I shadow more than once?
When do I arrive?
8:00 a.m. is the earliest you need to arrive for your shadow visit day. The school day begins at 8:15 a.m.
Do my parents come in with me?
If you would like or they would like to, parents are welcome to come in with you. They can also drop you off if you’d prefer. Similarly, at 3:00 p.m. you can meet them out front, or they can come in to pick you up.
What is the dress code?
There is no strict dress code other than reasonable dress—skirts and shorts not too short, shoulders covered, no cleavage or underwear showing, nothing offensive on shirts. But dress for weather! You will be outside to walk between buildings.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring a notebook and writing utensil. If you play an instrument and would like to play along in music class, you are also welcome to bring your instrument.
What if I want to see a class my host doesn't have?
Let us know when you arrive if there are certain classes you’d like to attend, and we can adjust your schedule accordingly. For example, if you’re a real math enthusiast, we can add upper-level math classes. If you’re a writer, we can put you in creative writing, even if your host doesn’t take it.
