University High School is excited to welcome Allyson Horton to University High School for the 2019-20 school year!

Meet Allyson Horton, English Teacher

Allyson Horton will join the University High School faculty as an English teacher starting this fall. She comes to University from Park Tudor School, where she has been the Director of Equity and Inclusion since 2018 and an Upper School English Teacher since 2016. During her time at Park Tudor, Horton has also advised the Spoken Word Poetry Club, the Center for Interfaith Youth Ambassadors, the Black Student Union 2.0, and the Speech & Debate teams. She also has several years of experience teaching at the college level; she served as a teaching assistant and two years as an adjunct professor at Butler University. In 2018, she published the book Quick Fire through the Third World Press Foundation.

Horton has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Butler University (with a concentration in poetry). While pursuing her MFA at Butler University, she had the privilege of being one of the featured readers for the New York Times bestselling author, John Green, during his appearance at the 2013 Writer’s Harvest held at Clowes Hall.

“As I begin working at University High School, I am most excited about seizing opportunities for new growth, creativity, collaboration and community building,” said Horton. “What I readily appreciate about University is its trailblazing approach to education combined with six inclusive core values. The school’s commitment to excellence in academics as well as diversity further illuminates the reasons why I have decided to plant my feet in such a fertile and nurturant environment—one in which the students, faculty and administration strive to lead by heartfelt example.”
