After thoughtful deliberation from our faculty, University High School has decided to cancel final exams for spring 2020. Final exams at University are typically cumulative tests or substantive projects that account for 10-20% of the final semester grade. While teachers may still assign a discussion, short paper, final unit test, project, or reflection to end the semester, it will not be worth substantially more than any other assessment.
As a result, the final day of spring classes will be Thursday, May 21 with an R2 schedule. We will then hold a virtual Prize Day for the full school community on Friday, May 22 (details to come). While there will be no required classes following Memorial Day, teachers will be available on Tuesday, May 26 (R1 schedule) and Wednesday, May 27 (R2 schedule) for students to re-assess, submit late work (with teacher approval), or finish anything else.
To our students — You have all weathered this transition to e-learning with flexibility, grace, and immense resilience. Your commitment to learning and to our community has been unwavering, even while many of you are dealing with the mental and emotional toll of living through a global pandemic. We hope that our decision to cancel final exams serves to both celebrate your incredible work and to relieve one additional burden in these unprecedented times.
