Over Winter Break, senior Xavier Lance built six Aldo Leopold benches for the University High School outdoor classroom. The benches are part of Xavier’s Eagle Project, a service project conducted en route to attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
Bench seating was the top request from both students and faculty on improvements to be made to our outdoor classroom space. Xavier delivered the benches in January. He also cleared a one acre plot of thistle from the central south corridor of our property.
Xavier said that through this project he “learned how to plan, procure [materials], and execute a small-scale construction project.” He also “hopes the benches will be put to good use in the years to come.”
Xavier is a member of Troop 112 Carmel. He will be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony later this spring. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts, and only around 5% of all Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts.
