SOPHIA FISHER, CLASS OF 2021
Sophia Fisher graduated from University in 2021 and studied art history and studio art. Today, she is pursuing her masters in London. Below, Sophia answers a few questions about her educational experiences and how University prepared her for life in college and beyond. What have you been up to since leaving University?
I studied art history and studio art at IU and graduated last December. I started my masters for Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in London in September. The program has already begun to teach me how to build a curatorial practice rooted in research, collaboration, and working closely with others.
How do you feel University best prepared you for college?
University instilled a passion for learning and a true engagement with the arts, specifically. I think these roots are also what pushed me to pursue higher education in graduate school, which has been amazing!
Please share your favorite University memory.
My best memories are University are in the art room, whether it was Art History or AP Art. I really learned the importance of collaborative work and understanding/encouraging other students. It has definitely impacted me as I learn how to create a curatorial practice based on collaboration.
What has been the most valuable experience you have had since leaving University?
Last December, I curated my first show! I got to compensate and commission five artists (who are close friends) to show work in my home and hold an opening for friends and family to attend. It was a really special, formative experience and established my passion for curation. I feel like I learned a lot about the field I’m going into, as well as my passion for art, specifically within the contemporary world.
