On Saturday, May 5 — 55 years after the Children’s Crusade march of 1963 — University High School freshman Sydney Williams and nearly 2,000 students from across the country converged in Birmingham for a commemorative march.

The march was part of a three-day program called “The Power of Children: Then & Now” organized by Jack & Jill of America.

According to local coverage of the march, “attendeesĀ came from Jack & Jill chapters across the country for events centered around the 55th anniversary of the Children’s Crusade, and the issues facing African American children today.”
