Visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art this summer, and you’ll likely see, or at least hear, the latest public art piece by University High School math and science teacher Luke Crawley.
As part of the IMA’s “Mini Golf at the IMA” exhibit, Mr. Crawley designed a mini golf hole that, when hit perfectly, plays the melody of “(Back Home Again in) Indiana.” His hole isn’t the only one to have an Indiana connection, though. In honor of the state’s Bicentennial this year, all 18 mini golf holes celebrate a different aspect of Indiana history and culture. Holes range in theme from auto racing to Lil Bub, Bloomington resident and celebrity cat.
Mr. Crawley’s mini golf hole is a par 3 and was designed in collaboration with Quincy Owens, Mr. Crawley’s artistic partner. It features the following description: “Back Home Again challenges players to move their balls past chimes tuned to the melody of ‘(Back Home Again in) Indiana’ by James Hanley and Ballard McDonald. The hole is designed by Quincy Owens and Luke Crawley of Owens + Crawley LLC, Indianapolis, whose sculptures have been featured locally and across the country. The musically interactive hole summons echoes of the great Jim Nabors at Indianapolis 500, which will celebrate its 100th running in 2016.”
