In honor of the transformative power of education that has been a cornerstone of their family for generations and in gratitude for their time at University, the Porter Family – Cassandra, Jeffery, Lauren (’22), and Lindsey (’26) – have established the L. Porter Family Scholarship at University High School of Indiana.
The L. Porter Family Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership, creativity, and a deep commitment to building community at University High School. This merit-based award recognizes a student who has made meaningful and lasting contributions to the life of the school through active engagement, initiative, and service to others.
The recipient is a student whose leadership is evident both in the broader life of the school and through meaningful participation in or leadership with affinity groups and/or diversity issues on campus. They not only take part but help shape experiences that bring people together, elevate diverse voices, and foster a strong sense of belonging. Through these efforts, the student demonstrates a clear commitment to community-building and inclusive leadership.
This scholarship also honors a student who embraces creative expression, whether through the performing or visual arts, and who balances these pursuits alongside other commitments, such as athletics, with energy and dedication. Their leadership is exemplified in the ways they mentor others, represent the school with pride, and contribute to a culture of connection and respect.
Above all, the L. Porter Family Scholarship celebrates a senior who leaves a meaningful imprint on University, someone whose presence strengthens the community and whose example will continue to inspire others long after graduation.
This scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000 awarded to a senior in good standing. Seniors will be nominated by their mentor in the spring of their senior year, with the announcement of the scholarship to take place at Prize Day.
Details of the selection process:
- Faculty and staff are asked to nominate students
- The faculty/staff selection committee reviews to make sure nominees are eligible. (The committee is chosen by the Head of School and consists of the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Director of Advancement, an administrator, and at least one other faculty/staff member
- Final nominees are asked to produce a 2-minute video with the prompt “How have you shown the values for the L. Porter award?”
- The Porter family will review the videos and make a final selection
