On Wednesday, Feb. 15, ten University High School students will compete for the coveted title of “Mr. University.” The fun-filled competition will showcase the best our students have to offer in rounds like a group dance number and a lip sync battle.
Mr. University starts at 7 p.m. in Andrews Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The Mr. University competition is presented by the UHS Riley Dance Marathon Committee and is a fundraising event for Riley Hospital for Children.

Jon Gray is the captain of the varsity public address club. Jon is infamous for standing too close to the mic during announcements and for being just an all-around cool guy. Legend has it that his voice cracked in 4th grade. On a dare, he attempted to fill the fridge with Wes’s stash of pretentious flannel shirts; unfortunately, it was impossible for them to all fit. Why the obsession with shirts? Maybe because he wears his heart on his sleeve.

If you’ve never met Kyle before, he might seem a bit intimidating, but don’t let that fool you. Once you get to know him, he’s like a big marshmallow. Some claim that Kyle loves Kyle more than Kanye loves Kanye. Fun facts: Kyle drinks exclusively from lava lamps, maybe that’s where he gets his extreme strength, and he broke both of the vending machines in Andrews with his bare hands after discovering that UHS was no longer catering Panda Express. Kyle Richards claims to hold the longest commute to University High School, driving in from Saskatchewan every day. This goes to show that he’s committed to excellence, and that he’ll be committed to you.

Next up is AD, living proof that a British accent is all you need to get a girlfriend. AD would have stayed in England, but they blocked Bob Ross’s YouTube channel. Known for playing Flappy Bird on his watch during morning meeting and describing himself as a “wanna-be Benedict Cumberbatch,” AD is an avid fan of taking multiple pieces of candy at a time from Candyland. He’s hoping to bring the crown of Mr. University back to the Queen of England.

Will Fair better count his blessings that he’s on stage with us and not in the jungles of Peru after losing his passport. A fun fact about Will is that he crashed his car sophomore year, saying that he got rear-ended. In actuality, he was Snapchatting his mom to keep his only streak and he ran into Damien Geter. Will took the Improv Comedy class as an excuse to talk to girls, and boy, did that work out for him! He can keep you laughing for hours, not to mention he’s equipped with an endless supply of date activities. He’s got improv games that can last hours, just like his rants about Star Wars.

David Flickner, also known as “Big Daddy D” and “D-Flick” is a junior. He can often be seen climbing into girls DMs; however, if that doesn’t work, he uses his Heelies to slide into them. David is known for taking off his sunglasses to reveal another, smaller pair of sunglasses. David is notorious for rigging the Stewardship elections in order to “Make Rock Climbing Great Again.” On the soccer field, David uses his hair to one-up his opponents. Simply staring at those lush auburn locks for too long can cause paralysis, and, occasionally, death. Hopefully, he can climb into your hearts and win the Mr. University crown.

Anoop Chinthala is a senior at UHS. He is known outside of school for starting tickle fights in the LA Fitness locker rooms. His exercise regimen consists of climbing the stairmaster at the same speed as Chuck Webster and aggressively clapping after the girls golf team announces a win. He enjoys long walks over the hills of Mt. University with his two pet cats, Sparky and Mittens.

Akhil actually knows the same number of core values as chakras. An avid fan of horseback riding, he often compares his hair to a racing thoroughbred. Akhil was the first person to download Pokémon Go when it came out in North America and the last at UHS to take Algebra. Akhil, despite his success in the NFL Pick’em League, chose Tony Romo in the first round of all his fantasy football leagues. Akhil is hungry for this victory, and claims that he will give Buffalo Wild Wings to anyone who supports him.

Legend has it that Christian Means cares more about lacrosse than Jon Wiersema cares about fixing the speed bump. He is notorious for taking four free samples at Costco when nobody’s looking. Christian is most proud of his YouTube channel, where he has 14 subscribers and routinely gets at least 10 views on all of his water bottle-flipping videos. While he may be #24 on the field, he’ll be #1 in your heart after this contest.

Quinn, a senior at UHS, is known best as either “that one kid who stole my girlfriend” or “that one kid I left my boyfriend for.” He is best known for being better than you at everything. Quinn has gotten more scrapes rollerblading than students have gotten “A”s in Ms. Dean’s Econ class. But don’t worry, he’ll roll his way into your hearts in his attempt to win the Mr. University crown.

Maxton is notorious for using two full bottles of bubble bath soap in the tub. Maxton can often be heard singing “Welcome to the U” in the restroom during 4th period. He is known for over-using the dog filter on Snapchat and for his debilitating addiction to Arnold Palmer. He scores goals on the University soccer team, and hopefully he’ll score the win in the Mr. University competition!
