For Taylor Newell, class of 2007, University High School was more than just a place to learn—it was a community where teachers nurtured every student’s potential. Among them was Founding Faculty and Dean of Academic Affairs Chris Bradley, his then history teacher and mentor, who helped him see learning as more than just coursework—it was a way of thinking, questioning, and engaging with the world.
Taylor had always enjoyed history, but at University, it became something deeper. Mr. Bradley’s approach in the classroom—holding students to high expectations while making them feel valued—helped Taylor gain confidence not just in his academic work, but in himself.
“He made it clear that our meetings mattered, that my time was important—but so was his,” Taylor remembers. “I showed up late once, and instead of rushing through it, he rescheduled. That stuck with me. It showed me that he was truly invested in those conversations, that he wasn’t just going through the motions.”
Mr. Bradley’s influence extended beyond history lessons. He had a way of seeing students not just for who they were, but for who they could become. “His message was clear: ‘I’m here for you, and the only expectation is that you’re here and present with me.’ He held us to high standards, but he never broke anyone down. He built us up.”
Now, as one of University’s Directors of Admission and a mentor himself, Taylor carries those lessons forward. The way Chris saw me as a student influences how I approach my work in admissions and as a mentor today,” Taylor reflects. “I look at students not just for where they are right now, but for who they can become. That’s what great teachers do—they see the potential in you, even before you see it in yourself.”
