The UHS Robotics Club is gearing up for its second competition of the 2017-18 school year. The team of eight, including senior Kevin Shen, junior Quinn Treber, and sophomores Alex Collier, Koki Hirano, Nick Jeffery, Any Tang, Karen Wang, and Katherine Zhong, will compete next Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 a.m. at Stonybrook Middle School.
The group meets several times a week, typically after school and often on Saturday afternoons, building, testing, and preparing robots for competition.
Robots start each match with a physical profile of less than 18 inches cubed with the option to expand to as large as the students want. Each match lasts two minutes and thirty seconds, and part of that time is spent moving in a pre-programmed autonomous period. The game is centered around moving small plastic cones around a field and stacking those cones on different sized bases that are also movable. The winner is determined by number of goals moved and cones stacked.
