Junior Maddie Sersic wants to make her mother proud.

Priscilla Sersic passed away from Leukemia and Lymphona one month after her daughter, Maddie, turned three. Today, Maddie is a junior at University High School, and she is honoring her mother’s memory by running for Indiana Student of the Year with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“Having always wanted to find a way to honor my mother, supporting this foundation felt right in my heart,” said Maddie. “My mother was beautiful, kind, giving, and an overall hilarious person. I strive to be someone she would be proud of and someone who has an impact on the community.”

Maddie’s classmate, senior Cissy Luo, is on the planning committee for the Student of the Year program, and she reached out to Maddie to encourage her to apply.

The process to become a Student of the Year candidate was lengthy. It involved an application, interview, goal planning meetings, and assembling a team.

Maddie’s primary focus now is to fundraise on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If she raises an additional $2,000 by the end of February, a donor has agreed to chip in an additional $10,000. Maddie hopes the generous University High School community will help her reach this goal.

“In a little over a month, my team and I have raised an impressive amount of money,” said Maddie. “But if the UHS community can help me raise an additional $3,000 by the end of February, an extra $10,000 will be added to that!”
