Several University High School musicians competed in the Indiana State School Music Association‘s (ISSMA) Solo and Ensemble competitions last month.
The Solo and Ensemble competition is split into two groups by instrument. Students who play wind instruments, percussion, and strings competed at the district level together. Students who play piano and since competed together in district as well. The following Trailblazers received medals:
ISSMA Wind/Percussion/Strings District Competition
- Christian Baltz, cello (Group 1) — Gold
- Danny Cardwell, flute (Group 2) — Gold
- Mikey Cardwell, alto sax (Group 1) — Silver
- Marie Coutant, trumpet (Group 1) — Silver
- Stacy Xu, cello (Group 1) — Gold
ISSMA Vocal/Piano District Competition
- Ezra Holladay, piano (Group 1) — Gold
- Lauren Langer, piano (Group 2) — Gold
- Lauren Langer, voice (Group 1) — Gold
- Lauren Porter, voice (Group 1) — Gold
To perform in Group 1, students must choose a piece from a list of challenging music. Students earning a gold rating played a performance that was “outstanding in nearly every detail.”
The state competition for vocal/piano musicians was held Feb. 19, 2022 at Perry Meridian schools. The following week, on Feb. 26, 2022, the state competition for wind/percussion/strings was held at North Central High School and Northview Middle School. The following student-musicians were recognized with awards at the state level.

Lauren Porter, Christian Baltz, Lauren Langer, and Stacy Xu all received gold medals at the state competition.
