Congratulations to several University High School students who received honors in the district level of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards last month.

Alex Altenburg’s award winning painting, “Canals of Venice”

Thousands of submissions were received from the Midwest, and University High School students received a total of 18 awards. Two of these awards were honored with the prestigious Gold Key award, and they will advance to national level competition. Additionally, freshman Alex Altenburg’s painting, “Canals of Venice” earned her the added distinction of the Best of Grade Award — an award highlighting the best work among all freshmen for the district.

    • Tina Zeng, senior, Honorable Mention in Design for “The Most Beautiful Mark”

There will be a virtual celebration for art award winners on Sunday, March 7, 2021. Details for the writing award ceremony have not yet been released.

Here’s how the award levels are broken down:

  • Gold Keys are awarded to work demonstrating the highest level of achievement in originality, personal voice and technical skill.
  • Silver Keys are awarded to distinguished work demonstrating achievement at the regional level.
  • Honorable Mention Awards are awarded to work demonstrating creative potential.

Students who receive Gold Key awards advance to the national level of the competition. National awards will be announced on Tuesday, March 16, 2021.
